The given brief was to design a fully detached, 4-bedroom family home. The design was to include a home cinema, study and a swimming pool. Other spaces like living room, bedrooms, family lounge and kitchen were also to be included in the design. The building is located in the prestigious Pinnock Beach Estate, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. The given plot was about 465sqm, so our first challenge was trying to fit all the required spaces on the plot, within the buildable limits, whilst ensuring the spaces remain conducive. The plus-side to the project was the plot being located at a waterfront- meaning we had views to take advantage of. The main goal was to create an experience within the building by maximizing the views andutilizing natural lighting- this further influenced the use of large windows. In a bid to utilize space and enhance the experience, the swimming pool was designed such that it touches the face of the exterior wall. That exterior wall was then perforated by large reflective glass windows which expose the living room to maximum natural lighting and creates a feeling of bringing the outside in. Upon entry into the building, you arrive at the ante room which opens up into the living room where you are immediately wowed by the double-volume over the living room with a large crystal chandelier dropping from the ceiling. The split-level ushers you into the sunken conversation pit in the sitting area; large windows by the swimming pool coupled with the absence of visible doors blurs boundary lines and opens up the entire space, thus creating visual continuity. The building has the guest bedroom, living room and kitchen on the ground floor. The first floor has the home cinema, study, 2 bedrooms and the master suite which has a walk-in closet and 180-degree views of the Lagos lagoon. The second floor comprises of a cozy family lounge and a roof terrace which give more outdoor views of the lagoon. The area of the building’s footprint is 165sqm, while the gross building area is 412sqm.
