The Ibukun Apartment
The given brief was to redesign an empty bungalow into a 2-bedroom house. The client was
very particular about her privacy and having a warm home that caters to her lifestyle. The
main bedroom suite has a walk-in closet and a large bathroom, while the second room
serves as a home office. An outdoor gym is also tucked away at the rear end of the building.
The building is located in Kosofe Local Government, Lagos state, Nigeria.
We named this project “Ibukun” which means “Blessing” in Yoruba, because of the gratitude
and expression of feeling blessed, shown by the client throughout the course of the project.
The total building footprint is about 124sqm.
Our first challenge was addressing the privacy concern within a small home. The client also
wanted an open-plan kitchen, so she can engage with her guests while cooking. What we did
to solve this was to make public areas open, with visual continuity while we hid private
spaces like the main bedroom. The only visible doors are those for exit/entry and that of the
home office. All other doors to private spaces are tucked away- subconsciously setting
boundaries for visitors.
The pallet choice for the living space was inspired by the client being a plant-mom. Earthy
tones and natural textures were chosen for the walls and floors, large windows were also
introduced to allow for maximum natural lighting and ventilation. A black-themed bathroom
specifically requested by the client, is one of the most interesting spaces in this home.
Materials commonly used across the project were granite, wood and natural stone tiles.
